A day in the life of … the Chief Constable

Photo of Chief Constable Keith Bristow07:00 am, a knock on the door, my driver for today awaits, and…. I’m off!

It is freezing and so cold that you could draw on the windows. My driver, Ian, has a cold and is sitting huddled in the drivers seat with handfuls of tissues and a nose as red (and wet) as Rudolph’s!!!

This morning I’m travelling to London to meet with other Chief Constables to discuss everything from police computer systems, to how to deal with car accidents on motorways.

My secretary, Janice, has given me a pile of papers to read on the journey (she says it’s to keep me out of mischief!), and for the first hour I read through these. I make a few telephone calls to check that all is well in Warwickshire, and then finally we reach London.

After my meeting we start the journey back to Headquarters. My thoughtful driver has very kindly bought me a sandwich and a cake, and I eat my lunch whilst reading through yet another pile of papers. I make another call to my secretary and she fills me in on everything that’s been happening during the morning. She usually gives me a list of telephone calls to make, because she says I can get lots of work done in the car instead of listening to the radio!

On the way back to headquarters I stop and visit Stratford Police Station. After catching up with the area commander we decide to go on patrol with some new recruits. We drive around town in the patrol car and I ask the new recruits about their experiences and how they enjoy their new life as a Police Officer.

After my patrol I arrive back at Headquarters just in time to meet with my chief officers and some guests who have been visiting Warwickshire Police for the week. Our visitors, 7 police officers, are visiting from Botswanna, Albania, Lebanon, Vanuata, Turks and Caicos, Oman and Ghana. The officers have been visiting Warwickshire Police for the week to see how we work. The weather has been so cold and wet this week quite a change from the very hot and dry weather some of them would have been enjoying at the moment!!!!!

Tonight I am going for a meal with our guests to a restaurant. The room we are having the meal in has a military museum attached, which has very old uniforms on display (far older then even myself). We sit down to a meal of chicken, roast beef and chocolate cake (can’t tell my wife as I am suppose to be on a diet!!!!).

It is past midnight before I arrive back at home. The house in darkness as I quietly tip toe up to bed. I have any early morning 7.00am start tomorrow as I am visiting our new justice centre in Nuneaton.
