Identifying Official Visitors

graphic of an ID card showing the tings to be aware of - Photo, name, company name, unique number, date of issueThere may be times when official visitors will need to come to your home to check meters or repair things.

If the visitor is from a recognised company they will have an ID Card similar to that shown right.

Always get your parents to ask to see the ID Card before letting them into your home. The stranger must prove that they are who they say they are. Make sure that:

  • the photo on the ID Card matches them.
  • the photo is clearly visible and that the stranger is not hiding the photo with their thumb/fingers.
  • you recognise the company name - is it someone you are expecting?
  • there is a date of issue or expiry date, check this carefully - if it has expired, question them about it and ask for a current ID Card.
  • if you are not happy with the ID, ask that you can have the card, close the door and do not let them in and phone the company to see if they know/have sent the person around to you. If they do not know them call the police.

If in doubt, do not let the stranger into your home.

Nothing is too important that it can not wait until an adult you trust is with you
